New Jersey College of Osteopathy

A.T. Still Osteopathy was discovered and systematized by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in 1874. Based on his philosophy, Dr. Still opened the first school of osteopathic medicine in Kirksville, Missouri in 1892.

Organized in 1904, the New Jersey College of Osteopathy is one of the oldest extant colleges of Osteopathy. The college was incorporated under the laws of the State of New Jersey in December, 1906 by Dr. Stephen Rock, Founder and Dean. It was incorporated in 1905 under the laws of the State of New Jersey. From 1905-1910 this college was conducted in Passaic, New Jersey and graduated about 105 students.

The course at that time was similar to that given by all Osteopathic Schools and Colleges, that is, two school years of six months each. In 1916 it became a part of the First National University of Naturopathy, and is now conducted as a Post Graduate Institution for those holding degrees in natural or allopathic medicine.

This College was recognized together with the Mecca College of Chiropractic, and the United States School of Naturopathy, by the United States Government after World War I through the Rehabilation Bureau (forerunner of the Veterans Administration) for the training of War Veterans. All the graduated veterans were licensed and successfully practiced. The expenses were paid for by the United States Government.

The New Jersey College of Osteopathy at the present time is now conducted as a Post Graduate Institution, giving Post Graduate courses to doctors of other schools of the healing art who present satisfactory evidence and qualifications entitling them to take a Post Graduate courses in this Science, teaching the Original Seventy-one Osteopathic manipulations of Andrew Taylor Still.

It was these manual movements that put Osteopathy on the map and this Science is now recognized in every State of the Union and in foreign countries.

The college was incorporated in Washington, D.C. under Congressional Act in November 1920 with the rank and standing of a university.

NOTE: The graduates of the New Jersey College of Osteopathy have in the past been recognized by the various State Boards of Osteopathic Examiners and have been recognized by the State Board of Medical Examiners of the State of New Jersey, and licensed in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Connecticut, Disctrict of Columbia, among others.

The New Jersey College of Osteopathy grants the degree of Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) and the post-doctoral degrees of Master of Osteopathy Ma.O and Philosopher of Osteopathy Ph.O.

Be it noted, however, that the Doctor of Osteopathy degree granted by the College is in drugless Osteopathy, not Osteopathic Medicine.

Osteopathy formerly had, in the United States, a two tier licensing system for drugless Osteopaths and for Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. States generally require a degree in Osteopathic Medicine to be licensed today.

OSTEOPATHY was made and discovered by Doctor Andrew Taylor Still. Osteopathy recognizes in the human body the most perfect, complicated and wonderful constructed machine, which, when properly adjusted is capable of normal actions unless interfered with by accident or otherwise. The practice of OSTEOPATHY is a scientific adjustment, by mechanical manipulations of the joins, muscles, tissues and viscera to promote the circulation and allow the vital fluids to circulate without interruption. The practice of Osteopathy is based upon a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and hygiene, and as taught by Doctor Still does not include medicine and surgery.
